Why Am I Losing Instagram Followers? Purges, Drop Rates and How Refills Work

You open Instagram and your follower count is lower than it was last night. Not by a handful, but by a few hundred, or a few thousand. Nobody left a comment, nothing went viral, and you didn't post anything controversial.

It happens to almost every account eventually, from small creators to celebrities with tens of millions of followers. Most of the time, the cause is one of five things, and only one or two of them are actually a problem.

This guide explains each cause, how to tell which one hit you, and how refill guarantees work if some of your followers came from a growth service.

Quick diagnosis
  • Big overnight drop across many accounts at once? Almost certainly a platform cleanup, like the one reported on 5–6 May 2026.
  • Slow, steady decline over weeks? Usually inactive accounts being deleted, or your content drifting away from what people followed you for.
  • Drop shortly after an order? That's low-retention followers falling off. This is exactly what refill guarantees exist for.

Reason 1: Instagram removed fake and inactive accounts

The biggest drops are almost always platform-wide. In early May 2026, users around the world reported sudden follower losses starting on 5 May and continuing through 6 May. Coverage called it the "Great Purge of 2026". A Meta spokesperson was reported as saying the drop came from a planned process of removing inactive and suspicious accounts, although not every outlet could get official confirmation of the details.

What we do know is that the pattern has happened before. In November 2018, Instagram announced it would start removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments generated by third-party growth apps, and said the effort would be ongoing. Cleanups have come in waves ever since.

When a purge hits, accounts with a lot of low-quality followers lose the most, but everyone loses something. Even Instagram's own official account was reported to have lost millions of followers in May. If your drop lines up with news of a purge and with friends reporting the same thing, you've found your answer. There's nothing to fix, and the followers you lost were never going to engage with you anyway.

Reason 2: People deleted or deactivated their accounts

Every day, a steady stream of real users deactivate, get suspended, or abandon accounts that Instagram later removes. If you have 50,000 followers, a slow trickle of losses from this alone is normal. You'll see it as a gentle downward drift rather than a cliff.

Reason 3: Real people unfollowed you

This is the one worth paying attention to. Check your Insights: Instagram shows follows and unfollows over time. If unfollows spike after particular posts, look at what changed. Common triggers:

  • A shift in topic away from what drew people in (the fitness account that starts posting crypto).
  • Posting much more often, or in bursts that flood feeds.
  • Hard-sell content after months of value-first posts.
  • Giveaway followers leaving once the contest ends.

Reason 4: Follow-for-follow churn

If you grew partly by following other accounts and waiting for a follow back, expect churn. Many accounts run the same playbook, then unfollow a few days later. The count looks healthy for a week and then sags. Automated follow/unfollow tools are also exactly the kind of activity Instagram targets in its cleanups.

Reason 5: Low-retention followers from a growth service

Here's the part most guides skip. Followers from panel services vary enormously in quality. The cheapest ones often come from accounts that Instagram detects and removes quickly, so they drop. Higher-quality options hold better, and services sold with a refill guarantee promise to top you back up if they do drop within a set window.

You can see this price-quality ladder directly on our own services list. These are the starting prices per 1,000 Instagram followers in different categories at the time of writing:

Instagram followers: starting price per 1,000 by category (SureSMM)
No refill$0.24
Guaranteed (refill)$1.30
Country targeted$1.37
High quality, guaranteed$6.36
"From" prices for the cheapest service in each category. Exact rates change as providers update them.

The gap between $0.24 and $1.30 is mostly what you're paying for retention. That's why a no-refill order that drops by half can end up costing more per follower than a guaranteed one that holds.

How refill guarantees actually work

Refill terms are usually written in shorthand in the service name. "R30" means a 30-day refill window. "Non-drop" or "less drop" describes expected retention, not a promise. Here's what a refill typically covers and how to claim one.

The provider records a start countWhen the order begins, the panel logs your follower count. Delivery is measured on top of that number.
You notice a drop inside the windowIf your count falls below start count plus the quantity you ordered, and you're still within the refill period (30 days for R30), you're covered.
You request the refillOn SureSMM, eligible orders show a refill button. API users can call the refill action with the order ID and then check progress with refill_status.
The provider tops you back upRefills restore the shortfall, not extra on top. Most providers process them in batches, so allow a day or two.
Things that usually void a refill: switching the account to private, changing your username (the order link breaks), or placing a second order for the same link from another source before the first completes, which muddles the start count. These rules are common across providers, so read each service description before ordering.

How to work out your real drop rate

Don't trust a gut feeling. Take three numbers from your order: the start count, the quantity, and your current count.

Drop rate = (start count + quantity − current count) ÷ quantity × 100

Say you started at 2,000, ordered 1,000, and now have 2,850. That's (3,000 − 2,850) ÷ 1,000 = 15% drop. If that's inside your refill window, request a refill. If you ordered a no-refill service, that 15% is the cost of the cheaper price.

Bear in mind that organic unfollows happen at the same time, so a small part of any drop may be your real audience rather than the order.

Can you prevent drops entirely?

No, and anyone who promises zero drops forever isn't being straight with you. Platform cleanups affect everyone. What you can control:

  • Prioritise retention over price. If you're buying followers at all, guaranteed services cost more upfront and less over time.
  • Grow in steady increments. Gradual, drip-fed delivery looks far more natural than a sudden jump of 10,000 overnight.
  • Keep the real audience happy. Your organic followers matter most. Consistent topics and a predictable posting rhythm cut genuine unfollows.
  • Watch engagement rate, not just count. Followers that never like or comment drag your engagement rate down, which brands notice. That's the trade-off with any non-organic growth.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I lose followers overnight?

A large overnight drop that other people are reporting too is almost always a platform cleanup of fake or inactive accounts. Instagram ran one in early May 2026, and has run similar cleanups since 2018.

Does Instagram notify you when someone unfollows?

No. You can see total follows and unfollows over time in Insights, but Instagram doesn't tell you who left.

Will lost followers come back on their own?

Accounts removed by Instagram won't return. If the followers came from a refill-guaranteed service and you're still inside the window, request a refill to restore the shortfall.

Is losing followers bad for my reach?

Losing inactive or fake followers often helps your engagement rate, because the accounts that remain are more likely to interact. The count goes down, but the audience gets more real.

What does R30 mean on a follower service?

It means a 30-day refill guarantee: if your count drops below the start count plus your ordered quantity within 30 days, the provider tops it back up.
